It’s almost miraculous that 10 Days Before the Wedding was made at all. The first Yemeni movie to be released commercially in over forty years, it was filmed in Aden, a city still bearing the scars of the civil war that reduced much of it to rubble. Because most of the city’s cinemas were destroyed, screenings were arranged in wedding halls and shown on a specially built screen. Appropriately, the film’s story is one of perseverance. Everything starts to go wrong for a young couple with ten days to go before their long-delayed nuptials. Groom Ma’moon loses his job and is kicked out of his parents’ home to make room for his recently divorced sister. On top of that, the family’s villainous landlord Saleem has taken a fancy to the bride, Rasha, and is doing all he can to thwart their plans. Will our young hero and heroine continue to believe that love conquers all? After the screening, join director Amr Gamal for a discussion of the film and the inspiring story of its production and exhibition. (Dir.: Amr Gamal, Yemen, 2018, 122 min., DCP, Arabic with English subtitles)
