Followed by a discussion with Frank Feltens, curator of the exhibition Hokusai: Mad about Painting

In 2018 Japan’s NHK television network was given unprecedented access to the Freer’s Hokusai collection so they could film the details of paintings using a state-of-the-art 8K video camera. The resulting documentary is hosted by actor Iura Arata and features commentary from the Freer and Sackler’s James Ulak and the British Museum’s Tim Clark. Explore masterpieces, including works currently on view in the exhibition Hokusai: Mad about Painting, at a never-before-seen level of detail and enjoy new insights into the artist’s genius. (Dir.: Kazuo Hara, Japan, 2019, 60 min., DCP, English and Japanese with English subtitles)
