Set in the lush countryside of the Indian state of Kerala, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s atmospheric, metaphysical thriller starts with two undercover cops on their way to the remote titular village in search of a wanted criminal. The villagers barely believe the cops’ cover story that they are there to work on a farm and take great pleasure in verbally abusing them with their impressively creative array of obscene insults. What at first seems like a straightforward thriller evolves into a labyrinth of stranger and stranger incidents, prompting film critic Sajesh Mohan to warn that the movie will “throw your world into a perpetual spiral.” Intended for mature audiences.
