Daughters is a moving exploration of empathy and forgiveness, born from an eight-year journey undertaken by filmmaker Natalie Rae and activist Angela Patton, who advocates for "at-promise" girls. As Aubrey, Santana, Raziah, and Ja'Ana prepare for a special event, they speak openly about their hopes, dreams, and disappointments. Their discussions reveal a deep wisdom and honesty regarding their fathers' inconsistent presence, showing an awareness beyond their years. 
 
The film challenges incarceration stereotypes and serves as a poignant reminder of the healing and empowering nature of maintaining family bonds. While Daughters showcases moments of joy, it also confronts more difficult emotions, such as heartbreak, skepticism, reluctance to engage, and anger, in a vérité style. However, the film also captures lighter moments, including classic dad jokes that shift the mood once again.
