Details | Watch the Trailer Based on Yu Hua’s popular novella Mistakes by the River, Wei Shujun’s “inventive riff on Asian-noir” (Jessica Kiang, Variety) has drawn comparisons to such illustrious company as Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder, and David Fincher’s Zodiac. Soaked in moody noir atmospherics thanks to Chengma’s ingenious low-light cinematography, it tells the story of Ma Zhe (Yilong Zhu), a detective sent to a small town in 1990s China to investigate a gruesome murder. An obvious suspect is quickly jailed for the crime, but when a mysterious answering machine recording emerges, Ma becomes convinced that there’s more to the story and pursues his hunch to with an obsession bordering on madness.
